This report was based on the results of an on-label, open label, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 clinical trial in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treated with finasteride. The primary end point was the rate of recurrence of urinary symptoms. Secondary end points were the number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH and the number of patients who required a second dose of finasteride to achieve the desired clinical response. Finasteride was not associated with significantly increased incidence of adverse events.

A total of 16 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were randomized to finasteride and a placebo for 6 months. The average age was 52.7 years (range 24 to 75) and the mean duration of follow-up was 39.4 months (range 9 to 54). The primary end point was the recurrence rate of BPH, measured by the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). The mean IPSS score was 3.0 (range 0 to 8). The mean number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH was 7.2 (range 1 to 26). The median dose of finasteride was 1.1 mg/day. The incidence rate of BPH at 6 months was 11.9% (range 5.9 to 26.8) for finasteride and 6.2% (range 3.5 to 16.7) for the placebo group.
The primary end point was the number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH and the number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH. The mean IPSS score was 2.5 (range 0 to 5) for finasteride and 3.7 (range 0 to 6) for the placebo group.
The number of patients who required a second dose of finasteride was 3 (range 2 to 8). The mean number of patients who required a second dose of finasteride was 4 (range 3 to 8).
There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of the incidence rate of symptomatic BPH. The mean IPSS score was 5.0 (range 0 to 10). The mean number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH and the number of patients who developed symptomatic BPH were 4 (range 2 to 8) for the placebo and 3 (range 1 to 8) for the finasteride group.
